“Revolutionary change does not come as one cataclysmic moment (beware of such moments!) but as an endless succession of surprises, moving zigzag toward a more decent society. We don’t have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in the process of change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world…” Howard Zinn, A Power Governments Cannot Suppress
“Yes, yes, I want to be one of those millions whose small acts add to the whole!”
So many people are feeling that way these days and so we have created a way for you to do just that.
Our DEMOCRACY BLOCKS program is actually a double entendre that means small blocks of time and a few blocks in your neighborhood.
WHAT TO DO!
- Create a set DEMOCRACY BLOCK with 2 hours you’ve saved by cutting down your Facebook, TV, or video time each week. Make it the same bat time and the same bat channel every week. Tuesday night from 6:30-8:30, Saturday afternoon from 1-3, for example. Treat it like a class or other rock-solid commitment. Tell other folks who want you at that time that you need to reschedule with them.
- Click on this link and tell us you’re ready to do your small act.
We will look up your area and find out if there is presently a Precinct Committeeman (elected or appointed person who has agreed to move Democratic voters in a designated area called a precinct, about 400 households) and, if so, we will connect you with them and let them know you are willing to work the 3-4 blocks around your home.
If there is no Precinct Committeeman in that area, we will make sure you are connected with the leadership of your township and let you know if others in your precinct sign up to join the fight so that you can support one another!
Materials you will receive:1) Contact information for the Chairperson and other support people in your township. You will be able to get direct support from them as well.2) An emailed PDF of the names and contact information of all of the Non-Republicans in your precinct. From that list you may choose the streets you are willing to work.
As soon as you receive the list and decide on your which streets or area you are willing to cover, please send an email to PC@dupagedemocrats.com and your township chair to let us know that information. We will enter that in our Democracy Blocks spreadsheet and our Volunteer Database and keep up with your outreach progress via email and phone calls.3) Information on our goals as an organization and the candidates who are supporting those goals with us.4) A script and templates for contacting the people in your Democracy Blocks by phone, by mail and by email. Your township also meets regularly and will add you to their outreach and support systems!
